We spent last weekend enjoying heaven on earth incarnated as the Alisal Guest Ranch and Resort. Tucked away in the ever so charming Danish inspired town of Solvang, the resort is the quintessential family destination harmoniously blending dude ranch, spa oasis, and kids playground into one penultimate experience. During the day, we visited the barnyard where an array of farm animals delighted Des to no ends. He particularly enjoyed looking at "teh tah," or turtle for those of you who don't speak toddler. An activities room filled with toys and books kept him entertained while M and I took turns indulging in "me" time. Horseback riding, golf, and fishing are a few of the more testosterone charged Dad activities while spa and let's be real, any quiet space to take a nap, were my leisure of choice.
At night, we threw caution to the wind and hired a babysitter to watch Des for a few hours while we snuck away for an adults only dinner and drinks. Leaving baby with a stranger is risky business but my nerves were calmed knowing we were just a few thousand feet away. And of course, she was amazing and he was fine.
When it comes to family travels, we're still a work in progress. Though I have friends who have travelled thousands of miles with their toddlers, I'm still working up the courage, the confidence, and the resolve to take more trips and get comfortable with the not so comfortable reality of traveling with a toddler. It's kind of ironic that I'm so timid about traveling these days when not too long ago I raced around the world on The Amazing Race, clocking in over thirty thousand miles in just three weeks. But I'm hoping that with practice perhaps one day in the near future, we can dust off our passports and put them to use.
